Marriage for God’s glory

This letter comes from my heart, a broken heart, but a heart that longs to please my Creator, Saviour, and LORD, Jesus Christ.

I am writing this because I attended your wedding. It may have been over a decade ago, you may not even remember because we have had very little contact since. But I need to tell you that I feel a responsibility from God to value your marriage. A value for your marriage that sees it as so precious to God, so good for the mission of God, and so representative of Christ and the Church.

My heart has broken recently because I have heard of the collapse of two marriages where I also attended the wedding. God has shown me how much this hurts Him. God has convicted me of the responsibility I had as a witness to those marriages to pray for them, encourage them, and help them grow and thrive.

I neglected my responsibility to those marriages. I am so sorry. And now I see the responsibility I have to you as a witness to your union under Christ.

You both made a promise before God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and before Jesus Christ, who died to bring us peace, with God and each other. That promise matters. Please never think of it as conditional or limited.

God has given you each other to love, serve, comfort, and support. That is such an incredible God given privilege you have to one another, but also to God.

I only seek to encourage you to strive for a closer walk with God in your marriage. I also want to apologise for not taking my responsibility as a witness to your union seriously. I promise to pray for you both, and while I have no authority to offer any advice, feel free to contact me if you think I can help.

O precious Father, I thank you for this beautiful couple that You have joined together. I pray they both grasp how important their promise to You is. I pray they honour that promise in all they do, all their thoughts, words, and deeds. I pray they both love and serve You with all their hearts. Please LORD, help them both to know You intimately and deeply. May they honour You in the world, promoting justice and loving mercy while walking humbly with You.

I pray not only for this couple You joined together, but also for everyone around them and everyone their lives touch. May their marriage be a good witness for You in our broken world. May friends, family, coworkers, and strangers see You in their marriage, see Your love, Your grace, Your truth, and Your Lordship.

May they both remain in Your word, learning from the Spirit and always following His lead. Please help them to grow in knowledge and wisdom, always leaning on the truth of Your Word. Give them both a heart that seeks Your glory in all that they do. I pray You continue to bless this union. In the holy name of the Father, Son, and Spirit we pray. Amen.
